Work organization

The surgical unit was operational from Monday to Saturday. First surgery of the day was scheduled to 7:30 am. There were dedicated ORs and shifts for each medical specialty, which facilitates scheduling

The sterile unit was at the new building while the surgical remained in the old one. There was a storage of sterile supplies in the floor above the surgical unit, and deliveries occurred through a dedicated elevator. The sterile unit staff collected used materials at the surgical unit eight times a day. Sterilized supplies were delivered six times a day

Working times and OR utilization policy remained the same. However, after the relocation, both the sterile and surgical units were located in the same building, in adjacent floors. Sterilized supplies were delivered through a dedicated elevator

Social

The surgical unit had 359 employees, including 106 doctors, 16 nurses, 135 medical residents, and 102 nurse technicians

Technical

2,200m2 and 13 ORs

11,000m2 and 40 ORs – 14 of these were staffed, equipped, and operational after the relocation

External environment

The hospital was part of the public healthcare network and offered a wide variety of complex treatments, being a reference centre in many specialties

In 2022, the hospital had 836 in-patient beds and 35 ORs – 13 at the surgical unit, 15 at the day surgery unit, 4 at the obstetrics unit, and 3 at the vascular unit

In 2022, there were 38,007 surgeries at the hospital, of which 11,378 occurred at the surgical unit

In 2023, the hospital had 836 in-patient beds and 62 ORs – 40 at the surgical unit (only 14 staffed), 15 at the day surgery unit, 4 at the obstetrics unit, and 3 at the vascular unit

In 2023, there were 39,886 surgeries at the hospital, of which 11,306 occurred at the surgical unit
